This is the 2nd movie I watched in cinema in Milan, in Italian, with S and tones of kids around. The first one was Ratatouille of 2007 which I liked very much even though I couldn’t get much with my poor Italian. This time with my improved Italian, I enjoyed definitely more “Kung Fu Panda” and those I-call-it-Western-Zen phrases in it.

The first I-call-it-Western-Zen phrase was said by Oogway, turtle in Chinese and a symbol of sagacity and longevity. He said “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift. That is why it is called the present.”

During the movie S and I understood the last part in Italian as “… oggi è d’oro e per questo si chiama presente.” We liked very much the way how it links today and present but why he said today is gold (oro means gold in Italian)? At that time I assumed it was from “jin tian”, today in Chinese, while the sound “jin” also means “gold.” Well well well, think I was too eager to make everything Chinese.

The second I-call-it-Western-Zen was actually the whole part when Po becomes Dragon Warrior and finds out The Dragon Scroll contains NOTHING. And then the  conversation between Mr. Ping and Po about the secret ingredient is “Nothing.” That’s right, the key phrase here is “there is no secret ingredient” and Po also explains quite explicitly at the last part of the movie.

We cannot forget the moment when Mr. Ping started the conversation by saying it’s time to tell Po a secret. We both thought initially the secret would be Po is not Mr. Ping’s son since they have nothing alike! Later when we talked again about this, S added that this part might want to show people that even you are different from all your family, you can always find your own place in this world. Very inspiring, isn’t it?

With the Italian dubbing, we missed out all the fun part of original voices which are definitely part of performance. Therefore we certainly will watch it again! Oh, by the way, we stayed in cinema until the very end and we saw the very last part of the movie. Have you seen it too?
